  • Al Fin: The Settlement of the South Pacific: Dienekes Anthropology Blog looks at the evidence behind different theories dealing with the populating of the South Pacific by Austronesians. Anthropologist s can use genetic evidence along with linguistic evidence to study the migrations of groups over long periods of time. The current consensus is that this vast migration began in Taiwan, and spread southward, then eastward, and branched to all points of the compass, eventually settling the Philippines, Indonesia, parts of New Guinea, and most of the South Pacific including New Zealand, Hawaii, and Easter Island (almost to South America).

  • Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • Ocean Motion : Background : Wind-Driven Surface Currents- Gyres: In this section, we examine the characteristic s of wind-driven surface-ocean currents, components of the huge gyres that dominate the central regions of the open ocean. The North Pacific Gyre is a swirling vortex of water made up of four prevailing surface currents that move in a clockwise direction: the North Pacific Current, the California Current, the North Equatorial Current and the Kuroshio Current. (A map of the world?s ocean gyres is available at oceanmotion.or g/html/backgro und/wind-drive n-surface.htm. ) These currents trap and concentrate debris within the gyre. Comprising most of the northern Pacific Ocean, the North Pacific Gyre covers an area of about 10 million square miles. The large amount of debris that has accumulated in this area has given the North Pacific Gyre the nickname ?the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.?
  • Transparency: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch | GOOD: By now, most of us are aware that there is a large patch of floating plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. What you may not know is that it?s not made up of plastic bags and empty bottles. It?s made up of billions of tiny pieces of plastic, and it?s basically invisible unless you?re floating in it. While this might seem better, it?s actually much worse for the environment?an d for you. Our latest Transparency is a look at the Pacific Gyre and the plastic floating in it.

  • Recycled Plastic Workout Gear: I read an article about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch a little while ago and it really scared me. One huge topic on www.Greenwala. com is how to recycle plastic if you have any or how to stop using plastic. But in all honesty, we are never going to fully get rid of plastic because it is EVERYWHERE! Chap stick containers, phone casings, pen's, bags, straws, etc. Its just sad to hear all these stories about this huge garbage dump in the ocean and how its effecting the ecosystem out there.
